Ahhh… deer are so stupid, they are like giant hoofed rats! Delicous though…. I know why they are out in the ditches, but how stupid they act when a car goes by is beyond me. I’m sick of deer! I want to see a moose!!!! Not deer!!!!!

Internship search 2

Well… yesterday I was palnning on calling Frontenac after finding out that Bear Head Lake SP already had interns for the summer… I was going to call them right after taking aa shower, and when I was done with the shower I saw that Frontenac called me. So, maybe I’ll get an internship there, I had a chat with Brent Anderson about it- who I’m starting to get very familiar talking to after me trying to work there for grounds worker last summer, me volunteering there, and just myself going to the park. Hopefully I get to work there, but who knows… I’m just a college freshaman, so if anyone comes in with more college experience I’m probably screwed.

After talking with Frontenac, I called many other parks- most no one was there to pick up… but I talked to Lake Bronson State Park (most northwestern park in MN) and he sounded very intrigued in having me as an intern, it sounds very promising.

Then this morning I had Savana Portage SP call me (and wake me up), he informed me that currently they don’t have a position open, but is trying to get the state let them have an intern this year, if I ended up there I would most likely be a night patrol. He’s keeping my name and number just in case he gets the chance to have an intern.

This Lake Bronson SP is keeping me hopeful, I’m just trying to get my foot in the door to learn, and start my future with the parks system. I can’t wait to get out there and do something, this is beyond a job or career to me , it’s just so much more- I hope somone takes me

Internship search…

I have been searching for internships… it’s not so easy.
There are a ton of internships all over the US that I could do but not get paid for.

There are a couple in Alaska that sound plausable, one would be me conoeing down two rivers “in the middle of nowhere” and checking up on the few camp sites and visitors that pass through, informing them about bear safety and leave no trace methods. They give you cpr training and whitewater rescue training. Apparently they make you have a shotgun… just in case something bad happens. Just patrol the river, and camp/hike when need be.
There are alos some where I could help in Alaskan parks and wilderness assisting current employees with tasks.

Another internship is in Idaho where the job would be finding out the population of cutthroat trout in streams in one particualr forest. I have to be able and willing to hike 10 miles a day and be able to wade in water for up to 8 hours… Also there are a couple other internships in Idaho that sound quite nice…

Then there are many internships in California, alot of them sound really interesting and possible, but I don’t like the heat…

A very promising internship is in Illinois in WMA’s working to preserve waterfowl habitat.

Another internship is at Voyageurs in MN, I don’t know if I’d be able to get that one.

I created a list of all the State Parks in Minnesota on saturday.. next weekend I plan on calling alot of them. Main parks I’m planning on calling are… Frontenac, Afton, Nerstrand Bigwoods, Bear Head Lake, Temperence, and Tettagouche.

The trip was great, tons of hiking, lots of quiet, and it was fun being able to share it with the guys. I like primitive camping, and I like winter camping. I beleive it was 8 degrees when we got back to Ely around 10AM. There just seems to be a drive in me that continues to be fueled the more I’m out in wilderness… I simply love it.

Considering Wolves as of late

I’ve seen another wolf while driving, and have noticed them much more as of late. While I go to bed the howls are echoed from somewhere north of the campus, I don’t know if I prefer it to the owl that kept on making noise, or when I first got here the loons with there beautiful & eree calls. While at work, I’ve been doing alot of brush removal and cutting up fallen birch trees with a bow saw by myself. This work is done at the resort, but with alot of the work it’s away from the actual resort and seems pretty remote. When dusk starts setting in they have been starting to howl, I think it’s a pack just on the other side of birch lake. I was throwing brush onto a burn pile in the mist (it’s been really misty, snowy, and foggy as of late) and heard them starting up again. I stopped and just looked out towards the lake through the norways and onto the fog rolling above the water, and just listened to the close yet far away calls coming from the lake. I just felt at peace and felt like mentioning it. Many noises come out of the superior national forest, and BWCAW, but I’m not afraid of any of them, I just appreciate them. I like being in the arrowhead of MN, many things are untrammeled by man yet. (but i still do miss home)

Next weekend, my two friends from one of the other rooms and myself are going into the BWCAW for 2 1/2 days. We are going to try Basswood lake for walleye, crappie, and pike. We’ll leave friday, camp near a channel for the night, and then the next day go up to an island further up the bay and camp for another night. It’s going to be an interesting experience loading everything into a conoe and venturing a ways up with snow on the ground. It will be from the 20 to 30 degree range the whole time. I’m looking forward to this, and hopefully plans go through as we hope.

Eating in Ely is rather gamey….. lots of fish, grouse, and venicine….. not to mention many other woodland critters shot by VCC students. I think next on the menu is squirell, beaver, and snapping turtle!

I need a different job for the summer, working in the Garden Center at Walmart isn’t horrible, but I need something that pays well and I can do until college…. I don’t really mind what it is as long as I am able. I would prefer though something that has to do with parks work (just nature in general), or security, but I can’t find anything.
